“The Waters of Winter”

In the heart of winter
when light is fading
day by day
inside and outside
until inside and outside collapse
into darkness

The waters of winter
arise out of the cold
and fall
as rain
and flow
and move
and in that flowing
are passing away

They move us in that passing
move through us
as nourishment and inspiration
for stiff bodies and suffering souls

Just as the waters of sadness and despair
and aching for our true home
when we let them wash over us
as tears and as convulsions of grief
when we let them overwhelm us like storms blown in
let ourselves be stripped back to nothing
but that which is
deep down in our bones

the true holy water
that which gives drink to thirsty souls
who yearn for that eternal light
that does not pass away
